About the Spur Trail

The Spur Trail is a recreational and open space corridor extending through Millbrae, from the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Millbrae Avenue on the east to Helen Drive on the west. Along the way, the trail winds through residential neighborhoods and follows portions of Millbrae Avenue and Minorca Way, with connections to parks, schools, recreation facilities, and natural areas.

The Spur Trail offers a mix of experiences along its route, with active recreation opportunities such as the Skate Park and National Fitness Campaign Station, as well as neighborhood parks like Rotary Park and Josephine Waugh–Soroptimist Park. Open landscape areas, mature trees, the Memorial Tree Grove, and bridges crossing Millbrae Creek add to the character of the corridor and create quieter stretches along the trail. Connecting schools, homes, neighborhoods, and community facilities, the Spur Trail is a distinctive part of Millbrae and everyday life in the community.

Why a Master Plan?

The Spur Trail is already a valued part of Millbrae, offering a place to walk, bike, exercise, and play, while connecting with neighbors and enjoying the outdoors. Recognizing its significance, the City of Millbrae wants to prioritize this key asset and reimagine how the trail can serve the community in the years to come.

The Spur Trail Master Plan will provide a long-term vision and roadmap for future improvements along its route, all shaped by the community. That could mean improving connections and pathways, enhancing landscaping, considering new recreation or trail amenities, celebrating the natural and community features that make the Spur Trail special, or exploring ideas we haven’t heard yet.

What We’re Exploring

To help start the conversation, we’ve identified six broad guideposts for thinking creatively about the future of the Spur Trail and what could make it better.

  • Connect People and Places

Explore ways to improve connections along the trail and to nearby neighborhoods, parks, schools, and other destinations.

  • Enhance the Trail Experience

Consider what could make the Spur Trail more welcoming, enjoyable, accessible, and comfortable for the many ways people use it.

  • Explore Recreation Possibilities

Think about opportunities for recreation, activity, play, exercise, and other experiences along the Spur Trail.

  • Celebrate Nature

Look for ways to enhance the landscape and celebrate the trees, creek, open spaces, and other natural features that give the Spur Trail its character.

  • Strengthen Community Identity

Explore how the Spur Trail can reflect Millbrae’s community, culture, history, and character and become an even more recognizable and valued part of the city.

  • Plan for What’s Next

Consider how ideas and potential improvements could be prioritized and implemented over time.

Planning the Spur Trail’s Future

The planning process will combine community input and City-established goals with an understanding of existing conditions to develop and refine priorities and recommendations for the Spur Trail.

The final Master Plan will identify recommended improvements and provide strategies for prioritization, phasing, and implementation over time.

Project Resources

Follow along as the Master Plan develops. Project materials, maps, presentations, outreach results, and other resources will be added here throughout the process.
